I may be wrong, but I thought main thing is the outlet flange, ie where the exhaust manifold joins the block, does whats inside the block affect fitting?

You can get a 1.5 SOHC X3, but they are only in the 5-door X3's in the UK - however there was a small run of Accent GT's abroad which were 3-door X3's with the 1.5 SOHC engine.
